Last modified: July 9, 2009 - 3:08 PM

Companion Animal Pounds
Warrumbungle Shire Council operates two companion animal pounds within its boundaries, one  located at Coonabarabran and the other at Coolah.
Council's pounds are operated in a professional manner in accordance with RSPCA guidelines.

Council’s pounds are not open to the public and trespassers will be prosecuted.

Any enquiries regarding impounded companion animals can be made during Council’s business hours 8.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Surrendering a Companion Animal
Residents may:
§  Surrender an animal for which they can no longer take responsibility
§  Surrender a dog that is roaming or uncontrolled and whose owner cannot be identified

Injured Animals
Injured animals should not be surrendered to the Council.  In the event that an injured animal comes under your notice, the animal should be taken to the nearest Veterinary Practice for treatment.

Retrieving an Impounded Animal
A person wishing to retrieve an animal from the pound after it has been impounded will be required to pay the following fees and charges before the animal is returned to their care:
§  Release fee
§  Maintenance / Sustenance
§  Any veterinary costs that may be involved

Also, under the Companion Animals Act, all animals MUST leave the pound registered and micro-chipped.  Council’s Officer will perform the micro-chipping and provide the relevant paperwork to be completed at the time of release.

Off Leash Areas - Published: 03 Jul 2009

The establishment of seven leash-free areas in the Warrumbungle Shire is part of a commitment by Council to promote responsible pet ownership and voluntary compliance, within the objectives of the Companion Animals Act.

As part of this process, consideration was given to accessibility, boundaries for containment and existing amenities.

What is an Off-leash Area?
An off-leash area is a designated space where your dog may be allowed to run around without the restraint of a leash.  Off-leash areas exist to encourage the basic principles of responsible pet ownership and to assist members of the public living in town, or with small blocks to exercise their pets.  Exercise is beneficial for you and your pet.  Most nuisance (barking and roaming) dog problems arise from boredom experienced by the animal and can be rectified or improved with regular exercise.

Responsibilities of Dog Owners in Leash Free Areas
Please be aware that Leash Free Areas are provided to cater for the needs of all dog owners and exist to promote responsible pet ownership.  At all times the owner responsibilities apply as per the Companion Animals Act.  It is your responsibility as a pet owner to ensure that your animal is under effective control, whether in an off-leash area or not.  If you reasonably suspect that your pet may not be friendly towards other animals, please ensure that it remains muzzled whilst in a public place.  Fines for a dog attack (currently $550) still apply within a leash-free area.
